Gowt's Bridge

I am love’s wandering Jew, and thus I knew

That I wouldst ne’er wake up with you

And though I tried to keep my pace

A seemly distance from your face

For fear of falling deep in love

And cooing like a collared dove

I found I could not compromise

When caught by your bewitching eyes

And when you laugh the angels sigh

And slowly hum a lullaby

To drift me into dream-like state

And briefly veil me from my fate

And when you smile the days are bright

And I forget this weary plight

Which God has etched upon my soul

Like fossil in a seam of coal
